Holdover Trout Holding Deep

Vincent Tauric showing his two trout caught last week

Bring your downriggers! Long time Collins Lake Angler and local guide Cal Kellogg recently reported a good trout bite using soft plastics down around 40ft. Kellogg said “The average trout is a holdover rainbow around 16 inches long, with the largest trout ranging up to 24 inches.”

As mid-week traffic has calmed at the lake, if you’re considering a late-summer guided trip, you can send Cal a message at 530-320-0368. Daytime highs are forecast to be between 80 and 92°F perfect lake weather!

There were also a few trout still caught on Powerbait. Thomas Hagerty caught a four pound trout on Powerbait. Butch DeMontraollin caught three trout by the dam on green Powerbait by the dam.

Frequent fisher Trent shows off a bass caught in Elmer’s Cove. Cal Kellogg also offered the following bass fishing report from August 10th at Collins Lake:

“The bass fishing, meanwhile, is flat-out fun. Topwater action can happen throughout the day, and the key is simple: find the bait and you’ll find the bass. Keep your eyes open for boils and other surface activity. Most of the fish are spotted bass in the 12- to 14-inch class, but there are some much bigger largemouth showing themselves from time to time.”

While weekends are busy throughout the year, weekdays in the second half of August are much quieter than you might expect. Come out and enjoy the lake!
