This Saturday the Annual WJU Trout Fishing Derby is happening at Collins Lake. The gate will open early at 5 a.m. and signups will be between 5 am and 6 am when the Derby begins. The prizes are huge and the entry is only $35.00 per person and Jr.’s are FREE.  This also includes a lunch and Collins Lake Ice Cream so don’t miss it.

We already received a Trophy Plant this week and tomorrow will release 2 more net pens full of 3 to 4 pound Trout, making it a triple plant this week.  Leroy & Bonnie Mudrick couldn’t believe their luck when they caught 2 limts of Trout including Leroy’s biggest Trout that weighed 5 lb. 5 oz. & Bonnie’s smallest Trout that had a $100 Red Tag on it.  Their secret weapon was “lemon twist” powerbait. Gary Murray & his son Mike returned for some father & son “bonding time” and had a blast limiting out on worms & flashers.

High school buddies Chris Hazen & Max Bell and their neighbor Mario Valenzuela limited out too just off the beach using Powerbait or Kastmasters (that’s 15 Fish!!!)  Doug Clark came without his buddy Jesse Trejo and caught 3 nice ones, his biggest was 4 lb. 12 oz.  William, Anthony, & Joaquin could do no wrong, each day they limited on Bass for 3 days straight.  They fished with plastic worms on the east side of the lake and even caught a 7 lb. 8 oz. Rainbow too.

Scott Bartosh & Jaysen McDaniels took Bobby Bartosh (Scott’s son) out for a day of fun and Bobby limited out on Trout by the dam.  Jim & Teri Kunz of Elk Grove have been camping here all week and hooked some fine Trout!

My F-Troop came back from So. Calif. for their annual fishing trip and left with huge smiles! Don Whitney of Lakewood used “Shasta Pinks” and killed the trout, his biggest a 4 lb. 4 oz. Rainbow.  He had help from Bob, Jim, Steve, & another Don who used the fire tiger colored lures as well and trolled by the beach.

Another private derby last weekend was the Annual Braggin Rights tournament and Kimo Lamont of Manteca trolled near the dam for his 3 lb. 7 oz. Rainbow.  Terry of Manteca had lots to brag about however, he hooked a 9 lb. Rainbow by the dam on rainbow powerbait.

Another group of guys, Carl, Dave, Brian & Michael hooked a $100 Red Tag & an 8 lb. Rainbow Trout still fishing on the east side using Rainbow powerbait.  Zach & Elijah of Yuba City worked together to net a limit of Rainbows, their biggest 9 lb. 4 oz.

The “Black Pack” of Rio Linda (Mark, Jeremy, Keith, & Joshua) couldn’t do anything wrong on Sat. they managed to hook 20 Trout off the bank or trolling with flashers & nightcrawlers. Gabe Garbarino  broke his own record with his 6 lb. 8 oz. Rainbow catch using powerbait on the east side. He fished with Jesse Joseph who caught two Trout around two pounds each.

The temperature of the lake is coming up again and we are almost at our prime season for Bass. The temperature is back up to 60 degrees and the Bass fishermen are waiting anxiously for a reading around 65 degrees before the females start to bed down.   This week a lot more Bass were caught then had been in prior weeks which is a good inclination the young males are in their  “protection mode”.
